What do Governors do?
We work together, as a Governing Body, to make important collective decisions. We are answerable to parents and the community. Our role can be summarised as: providing strategic management, acting as a critical friend and ensuring accountability. Specific responsibilities include:
- Promoting high standards of education and achievement
- Planning the school’s long-term future
- Setting the school’s aims and values
- Appointing senior staff including the Head Teacher
- Working with the school to set the budget, and monitoring financial performance throughout the year.
In all of these we work closely with the Head Teacher and other staff, and with the support of the Local Authority. Governors receive training, usually from Haringey, to cover not only our essential role but also specialist knowledge, such as Financial Management, Inclusion, Health and Safety etc.
What don’t Governors do?
Governors do not have individual responsibility – all decisions are normally taken by the Governing Body as a whole - and we do not run the school on a day to day basis. This is the responsibility of the Head Teacher and the school staff. Although Governors often come into the school, for a variety of reasons, we do not inspect or assess lessons.
